Project Name: Railroads

Overview

  • This project is intended to reach the following

Understand the important role railroads played in the development of the U.S. during the late 19th Century.

1.  Purpose of the Railroads

  • The railroad opened the way for the settlement of the West, provided new economic opportunities, stimulated the development of town and communities, and generally tied the country together.

  • The railroads brought people with them, which caused settlements to spring up along the way. The most important aspect is that it allowed the west to open up, meaning trade could occur faster and more efficiently.

  • It distributed materials and goods, along with bringing people  from place to place. Also, saving money.

2. Time period (important dates)

1862 – Congress passed the Pacific Railway Act which authorized the construction of a transcontinental railroad

1869 – May 10th the first transcontinental railroad was completed

1870 - Railroad construction in the United States increased dramatically

Prior to 1871, approximately 45,000 miles of track had been laid

1871 – 1900 - 170,000 miles of track had been laid

1894 – Railroads were shut down during the great railroad strike

1900 – Five total transcontinental railroads connected the eastern states with the pacific coast

3.  Impact on the development of west

  • Traveling by wagon or river from say, St. Louis to Oregon took months. It could be done in a couple of days by rail.
  • Railroads supplied cities and towns with food, fuel, building materials, and access to markets
  • In the late 1800's railroads had a virtual monopoly on all local and long distance travel, with no competion from road travel and of course no air travel.

4. The Great Railroad Strike of 1877

  • Central Pacific-The Central Pacific Railroad was the California to Utah portion of the first transcontinental railroad in North America
  •  Pennsylvania Railroad- founded in 1846 it was the largest railroad by traffic and revenue in the U.S. throughout the first two-thirds of the twentieth century
